In Matthew 6:16-18, Jesus says, “Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.”
This passage of scripture gives us some great insight as to how and why to fast. I immediately see three things. The first thing I see is that when Jesus says, “Moreover when ye fast…”, I see that the Lord expects us to make fasting a regular practice in our spiritual lives. The second thing I see is that fasting is not about gaining pity from anyone. Fasting is not a public worship practice, but yet it is a private worship practice. Jesus makes mention of those that are public about it, and states they have their reward. The mention of reward bing me to my third observation. The believer’s reward comes in a bigger package from the rewarder. Praise God? I want the greater reward, and I want everyone to see me receive it because I want Him to be glorified!.
This month, I and Mat-Su Christian Center invite you to fast with us! Ask yourself, “When was the last time I pressed in and sacrificed for God?” When was the last time that you went without feeding your flesh, so that you could hear more clearly from God? When was teh last time you hungered more for God than for this world? I invite you to take the nest step in your spiritual walk to touch the throne room of God through prayer and fasting.
Trust me. It will be the best step in you’ve ever taken as a believer since getting saved!
